Lakers host Defending National Champs

SAULT STE. MARIE –The Lake Superior State hockey team is taking on the defending national champions for the first time in nine years.

Michigan State’s post-season bid was on the line when the Spartans edged the Lakers 7-6 in overtime during the consolation game of last year’s Central Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs. The Spartans went on to win four more games, including a 3-1 victory over Boston College for the NCAA title.

LSSU (2-9-1 overall, 0-6-0 CCHA), which lost two overtime decisions to MSU last season, plays host to the fifth-ranked Spartans at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena. Both games will be broadcast live on Rock 101 FM and simulcast on http://www.lssulakers.com/. A pay-per-view video feed is available on the B2 Network.

This weekend’s series includes several special events. A Teddy Bear Toss is scheduled for Friday when the Lakers score their first goal. Fans can bring a stuffed animal to toss, or they can purchase one at the game. The stuffed animals will be donated to family services and local law enforcement agencies.

On Saturday, the Lakers will pay tribute to long-time scorekeeper Bud Clarke, and the LSSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will hold a silent auction to benefit women’s athletics and local charities.

Clarke has been with LSSU hockey since the program began, serving as public address announcer during the team’s Pullar Stadium days until the mid 1990s. He was on the mic when current MSU Director of Athletics Ron Mason was the Lakers’ coach (1966-73), when current MSU hockey coach Rick Comley was a Laker player and coach (1967-76), and when current LSSU coaches Jim Roque and Joe Shawhan were players (1982-87). Clarke now runs the clock and penalty box with the Atkins brothers.

Among the items up for auction are Red Wings memorabilia, a Ryan Miller autographed photo, Detroit Pistons tickets, a Laker quilt and individual lessons. One of the most-prized items is an autographed print of Gordie Howe, Al Kaline, Dave Bing and Joe Schmidt. It’s one of only 1,000 copies.

The last time the Lakers played the defending national champion was during the 1998-99 season when they faced 1998 NCAA champion Michigan.

This year’s Michigan State team is 8-3-2 overall and 4-2-0 in the CCHA, but the Spartans are winless (0-2-2) in four straight home games. After getting swept by No. 1-ranked Miami, they tied No. 14 Minnesota 3-3 and No. 13 Wisconsin 4-4 last weekend in East Lansing. MSU, however is unbeaten (6-0-11) in its last 17 overtime games.

LSSU can boast of a better record against nationally-ranked teams so far this season. The Lakers are 1-6-1, while MSU is 0-3-2.

Michigan State scored first against Wisconsin last Saturday, netting the game’s opening goal for the first time in four games. LSSU, which is looking to snap a five-game losing streak, has either scored first or led in each of its last four games, but has been shut out in the second and third periods.

LSSU coach Jim Roque is looking for more defensive support in front of his goaltenders and for a more-balanced offensive attack. LSSU’s scoring has been coming from the line of senior Dan Eves (4-6—10), sophomore Zac MacVoy (1-4—5) and freshman Rick Schofield (2-4—6), which has notched a goal in each of the Lakers’ last four games.

Michigan State is led in scoring by junior forward Tim Kennedy (11-5—16) and senior defenseman Daniel Vukovic (2-10—12).

LSSU Continues to Struggle in CCHA Action

The Lakers continue to struggle after being swept by Northern Michigan University. Friday night in Marquette LSSU was able to take an early 1-0 lead on John Scrymgeour’s second goal of the season at 10:02 of the first period with Steve Olesky and Chad Nehring tallying the assists. NMU’s Nick Sirota, tied it up at 1-1 scoring his 11th goal of the season on the power play just over a minute later, at 11:31, while Oleksy was serving 2 for tripping. Dan Eves gave the Lakers the 2-1 lead on the power play at 13:18 with Zac Macvoy and Rick Schofield getting the assists on LSSU’s second goal.

After taking a lead into the locker room after the first period for the third straight game LSSU’s second period struggles continued with NMU’s Phil Fox, and Matt Siddall scoring in the second period to give the Wildcats a 2-3 lead, Siddall’s goal was shorthanded.

NMU’s Gregor Hanson added a goal in the third period to hand LSSU a 2-4 loss.
LSSU freshman goaltender Brian Machoney-Wilson made 17 saves on NMU’s 21 shots while NMU’s Reid Ellingson made 26 saves on LSSU’s 28 shots to record the win. LSSU went 1-for-5 on the power play while NMU was 1-for-4 with the extra man.

On Saturday night the story was much the same with LSSU’s Dan Eves scoring a power play goal at 5:27 of the first period and Cowie and MacVoy getting the assists. NMU’s Mark Olver scored a power play goal with less than a minute left in the first period to tie the game up at 1-1.
After a scoreless second period NMU added two goals in the third period with Gregor Hanson and Mark Olver scoring at 9:31 and 11:08 respectively.

Mahoney-Wilson making his second start in two nights made 21 saves on the 24 shots he faced in a losing effort making while Ellingson recorded 19 saves on the 20 Laker shots he gaced. LSSU went 1-for-4 on the power play (2-for-9 on the weekend), while NMU scored one power play goal on their 6 opportunities (going 2-for-10 on the weekend).

Next weekend LSSU plays host to Michigan State University in CCHA play. The Lakers are still in search of their first point in CCHA action.

Lakers Set to Defend Cappo Cup

SAULT STE. MARIE - There are so many reasons to love the four-game Lake Superior State v. Northern Michigan hockey series: the Upper Peninsula rivalry, the proximity of the teams, the winning tradition of both programs, the match-up between Sault Ste. Marie cousins Steven and Ray Kaunisto, and the fact that NMU is one of only two schools that the Lakers compete against in every Division I and II sport on a regular basis.

The Lakers (2-7-1 overall, 0-4-0 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) and Wildcats (3-9-0 overall, 2-8-0 CCHA) play at 7:35 p.m. Friday at the Berry Events Center in Marquette and at 7:35 p.m. Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie. Note Saturday’s late starting time, which was established to accommodate Squirt AA teams playing in a local tournament. Both games will be broadcast live on Rock 101 FM and simulcast on www.lssulakers.com. Video streaming of both games is available on the B2 Network for $6 per game.

The Lakers and Wildcats are battling for the Father Louis Cappo Cup, which LSSU won last year for the first time since 1999-00, and trying to get on the winning track in the CCHA. Both teams have had a challenging first-half schedule, but the Wildcats have won two of their last three games, beating Western Michigan 4-3 in overtime on Nov. 10 and edging Bowling Green, 3-2, on Nov. 17. Their victory over WMU was a confidence builder, as they scored the game-tying goal with one second remaining in regulation and the game-winner with four seconds left in overtime. Sault Ste. Marie native Ray Kaunisto tallied the game-winner against BGSU.

This weekend’s games are sandwiched between last week’s LSSU home series against No. 1 Michigan and next week’s home series against defending national champion Michigan State. The Wildcats, Wolverines and Spartans are all part of the Lakers’ CCHA cluster this season. The last time LSSU was in this cluster was in 2002-03, and the Lakers finished 2-10-0 and were outscored 43-18 in those 12 games. Expectations are much higher in 2007-08 as the Lakers are coming off of back-to-back winning seasons.

LSSU was outstanding in the first period of both games against U-M, leading 1-0 on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday after the opening 20 minutes. But Michigan dominated the second and third periods by a combined score of 10-0. The second period was particularly frustrating for the Lakers, who gave up two goals in a 2:07 span early in the middle period on Friday. The following night, they gave up three goals in a 2:48 span during the opening five minutes of the second period. The young Lakers are learning the hard way that they can’t afford any lapses against the nation’s top teams.

LSSU’s top scorers are senior Dan Eves (2-6--8) and sophomore Nathan Perkovich (7-0--7). NMU is led by junior Nick Sirota (10-6--16), who is currently the CCHA’s No. 2 scorer and leads the league in short-handed goals with three.

Both rosters include only three seniors and are dominated by underclassmen. LSSU dressed seven freshmen on Saturday against U-M, while NMU dressed eight including a redshirt freshman on Saturday against BGSU. Top-scoring freshmen include LSSU’s Chad Nehring (2-3—5) and NMU’s Jared Brown (3-4—7).

LSSU freshman goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson (1-3-0) has a 2.68 goals-against average and .911 save percentage. NMU’s most-utilized goaltender is sophomore Brian Stewart (2-6-0) with a 4.08 GAA and .843 save percentage, while freshman Reid Ellingson (1-2-0) has a 3.74 GAA and .882 save percentage.

LSSU Swept by Michigan

LSSU was able to take a 0-1 lead on Friday night with Rick Schofield scoring his second goal of the season at 12:02 of the first period with Dan Eves and Zac MacVoy tallying the assists on Lake Superior’s lone goal in the game, but where unable to maintain the lead or score again falling to The University of Michigan 5-1.

Michigan was able to tally five unanswered goals after falling behind to LSSU on goals by Max, Pacioretty, Travis Turnbull, Aaron Palushaj, and two by Kevin Porter.

LSSU freshman goaltender Brian Machoney-Wilson made 28 saves on the 33 shots he faced, his worst showing of the season. Michigan’s Billy Sauer made 24 saves on LSSU’s 25 shots to record the win. LSSU went 0-for-5 on the power play while U of M was 1-for-3 with the extra man.

Saturday night LSSU fell behind early with Michigan’s Kevin Porter scoring his NCAA leading 12th goal of the season 2:58 into the game. LSSU was able to battle back with former Wolverine Zac MacVoy scoring his first goal as a Laker tipping in a shot from Dan Eves with Rick Schofield also getting an assist on the goal. John Scrymgeour continued his comeback from last season’s injury tipping in Jason Blain’s shot with Pat Aubry getting the second assist on the goal, giving LSSU the lead after the first period for the second night in a row.

Everything went downhill from there for the Lakers with Michigan scoring three goals on 4 shots in the first five minutes of the second period and chasing LSSU starting goaltender Pat Inglis. Michigan added two more goals against third period including an empty net goal at 15:59, while LSSU was unable to add another goal on the night.

Inglis made 9 saves on the 13 shots he faced in a losing effort while Mahoney-Wilson recorded 16 saves on 18 shots in relief, while Sauer recorded 34 saves on 36 Laker shots for the win. LSSU went 0-for-10 on the power play (0-for-15 on the weekend), while U of M scored one power play goal on their 3 opportunities (going 2-for-6 on the weekend).

Notes: Nathan Perkovich didn’t score a goal for the first weekend this season…LSSU goaltenders have a combined .873 Save Percentage this season and a 3.67 Goals Against Average…LSSU is 0-4 in CCHA play this season and are 2-for-26 on the power play in league games.

Next weekend LSSU plays a home and home series with Northern Michigan University in defense of the Cappo Cup. LSSU trails the all-time series, 26-50-7, including a terrible 9-30-3 record in Marquette and 17-20-4 record at home.

Lakers Return Home to Host Michigan

SAULT STE. MARIE – The Central Collegiate Hockey Association owns the top three spots in both national polls for the second straight week. Lake Superior State will take on one of those teams, the University of Michigan, in its first CCHA home series of the season.

Michigan (9-1-0 overall, 6-0-0 CCHA) is ranked No. 1 in this week’s USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll and No. 2 behind Miami in the USCHO.com/CSTV Poll. Miami is No. 2 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, while Michigan State is third in both polls.

The Lakers (2-5-1 overall, 0-2-0 CCHA) and Wolverines play at 7:05 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Taffy Abel Arena. The games will be broadcast live on Rock 101 FM and the B2 Network. Free audio web streaming is available on http://www.lssulakers.com/. In celebration of the opening weekend of firearm deer season, the Lakers are declaring “Open Season on the Wolverines,” and fans can wear hunter’s orange, flannel or camouflage in support of LSSU. Thundersticks will be given out to fans on Friday. Saturday’s first intermission will feature Turkey Bowling sponsored by Dondee Lanes and Neville’s Superette.

The CCHA includes several teams whose lineups are dominated by underclassmen in 2007-08. Matchups between Lake Superior State and Michigan, or Northern Michigan and Ohio State, or No. 10 Notre Dame and any of the above-mentioned teams could potentially be transformed into one of the greatest JV games of all time.

LSSU dressed 15 underclassmen, including eight freshmen, for last weekend’s non-conference series at Wayne State, which was the Lakers’ first opponent that hasn’t been mentioned in the national polls so far this season. Michigan has been dressing 12 or 13 underclassmen, and regularly skating six freshmen forwards and four rookie defensemen. Six U-M rookies are currently listed among the top 11 on the CCHA freshman scoring list with a combined total of 15-32--47. Upperclassmen, however, still dominate the league’s overall scoring lead, so the stars haven’t fallen out of alignment quite yet.

LSSU and Michigan are playing a two-game series in Sault Ste. Marie for the first time since Feb. 23-24, 1996. For the past 11 years, Lake Superior State has been contracted to split a home series with either Michigan or Michigan State and play one home game a year at Joe Louis Arena. With the expiration of that contract, which helped fund the Gem of the North construction project in Taffy Abel Arena, LSSU is thrilled to have the opportunity to resume home series with two of the nation’s most-recognized college hockey programs. Over the past 10 years, the Lakers are 3-4-0 against the Wolverines in Taffy Abel Arena, but they have an all-time home record of 22-14-3 against U-M.

Lake Superior State is coming off a split at Wayne State that included a 3-2 win on Friday and a 2-1 loss on Saturday. Sophomore forward Nathan Perkovich scored a goal in both games to extend his streak to seven goals in eight games.

Michigan swept a home series with Alaska, winning 4-0 and 4-2. The Wolverines also swept Northern Michigan and Nebraska-Omaha on the road this season. U-M, Miami, Notre Dame, Ferris State, UNO, NMU and Ohio State all have at least four CCHA games in hand on the Lakers. Michigan State, Bowling Green, Western Michigan and Alaska have two or three games in hand, so LSSU has ample opportunity to gain ground in the points race.

Michigan, whose only loss was to No. 12 Minnesota, 4-3, at the Ice Breaker Tournament in St. Paul, Minn., on Oct. 13, are led by seniors Kevin Porter (9-3—12) and Chad Kolarik (6-6—12), and freshman Aaron Palushaj (3-6—9). Junior goaltender Billy Sauer has a goals-against average of 2.19 and save percentage of .904, and is riding a shutout streak of 128:30.

U-M’s roster includes 13 NHL draft picks, including first-rounders Mark Mitera (junior defenseman), Max Pacioretty (freshman forward) and Chris Summers (sophomore defenseman). Palushaj went in the second round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, and freshman defenseman Kevin Quick is a third-round pick.

This weekend’s series will feature only five four-year players: Porter and Kolarik of Michigan, and Dan Eves, Justin Gutwald and Jason Blain of Lake Superior State.

Perkovich currently leads the Lakers in scoring with 7-0—7, followed by Eves at 2-4—6 and freshman Chad Nehring at 2-3—5. Perkovich is currently tied for fourth in the CCHA in power-play goals with four and tied for fifth in overall goals scored. LSSU sophomore goaltender Pat Inglis (1-3-1) has a 3.88 goals-against average and .859 save percentage, while freshman Brian Mahoney-Wilson (1-2-0) has a 2.06 GAA and .929 save percentage.

Mahoney-Wilson and Sauer are currently ranked third and fourth, respectively, in overall goals-against in the CCHA.

LSSU Splits with Wayne State in Detroit

Lake Superior State University’s hockey team split with Wayne State University this weekend in their final trip to Detroit to take on the Warriors.

Sophomore Steven Kaunisto scored his second goal of the season on the power play just 2:06 into the first period, Dan Eves and Nik Sellers made the assists on the goal. Wayne State tied it up at 1-1 with Bryan Olds scoring his first goal of the season some 10 minutest later, at 12:32 of the first period.

After a scoreless second period Laker Captain Troy Schwab tallied his first goal of the season at 4:32 of the third period off an assist by Simon Gysbers. LSSU’s Nathan Perkovich added an insurance goal, his 6th goal in 7 games with Rick Schofield and Steve Olesky notching assists on the goal. LSSU needed Perkovich’s insurance goal for the win with Wayne State scoring with 10 seconds remaining in the game with Tylor Michel putting one past sophomore goaltender Pat Inglis as the Warriors played with a 6th attacker.

Pat Inglis gave up 2 goals on 22 shots for his first win of the season, while the Laker offense put 3 goals past Wayne State’s Brett Bothwell on 19 shots. LSSU went 1-for-3 on the power play, and kept Wayne State scoreless in 5 power play opportunities.

Saturday night saw freshman goaltender Brian Mahoney-Wilson starting again as LSSU head coach is using the goaltending tandem for the third weekend in a row. Wayne State took a 0-1 lead at 16:56 of the first period with Jon Grabarek scoring his second of the season on the power play. Wayne State’s Jared Katz put the Warriors up 0-2 at 17:06 of the second period.

With Lake Superior down 0-2 Perkovich scored his 7th goal of the season, off of a pass from Josh Sim, on the power play at 2:33 of the third period. LSSU was unable to score again despite spending another 2:42 on the power play in the third period including 42 seconds of 6-on-4 play when Mahoney-Wilson was pulled for an extra attacker at the end of the game.

Mahoney-Wilson recorded 15 saves in the losing effort, while Wayne State’s Kyle Funkenhauser posted 24 saves on the 25 Laker shots he faced, to record Wayne State’s first win this season. LSSU went 1-for-7 on the power play (2-for-10 on the weekend), while Wayne State scored 2 goals on 6 power plays (2-for-11 on the weekend).

Next weekend LSSU plays host to #2 University of Michigan in their first CCHA action at the Taffy Able arena this season, both games start at 7:05 p.m.

'Hockey Day' in Michigan Set for February 16

It’s more popular than Football Night in America, and more anticipated than Hockey Night in Canada, yes the Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced this week that the third annual Hockey Day in Michigan will take place February 16, 2008. The CCHA, FSN Detroit, the Detroit Red Wings and the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association are teaming up to bring a coast-to-coast celebration of the sport of hockey to participants and fans across the state.

This season, coast-to-coast doesn't just mean Muskegon to Port Huron, although the Fury and the Icehawks will be playing each other on the 17th. This year's event has been scheduled to coincide with USA Hockey's "Hockey Weekend Across America" February 15-17, 2008.

Michigan has nearly 70,000 registered players, coaches and officials in addition to almost 5,000 teams registered with USA Hockey, which is the most of any state in the nation.
Hockey Day in Michigan will feature contests, clinics and a pair of televised college hockey games, including Michigan State at Western Michigan and Lake Superior State at Michigan (7:35 PM), broadcast on FSN. In conjunction with HDIM, the CCHA will hold two "Have Fun, Play Hockey" Clinics at Novi Ice Arena and Suburban Ice - Macomb. These clinics give boys and girls ages 5-11 an opportunity to experience the fun of hockey for the first time at no cost.

CCHA Commissioner Tom Anastos recognizes two main objectives for Hockey Day.

"The first is to celebrate the passion and interest in the game. There are thousands of volunteers, coaches, officials, managers and players who give countless hours to the game and this is an opportunity to honor their contributions," said Anastos, recognized by The Hockey News as No. 68 on the list of the 100 Most Influential and Powerful people in the sport.

"In addition, it's a great opportunity to bring special attention to the sport and raise its profile with the hopes that more people become aware of the sport and might consider trying it, watching it or simply becoming a little bit more aware of it."

USA Hockey's "Hockey Weekend Across America" will feature various activities including "Wear Your Jersey to School Day" and "Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day." The weekend will culminate with the Labatt Blue/USA Hockey Pond Hockey Championships in Eagle River, Wisconsin.

"Last year the state of Minnesota celebrated `Hockey Day,' and now this year, USA Hockey is launching a nationwide celebration of the game, which is exactly what we had hoped would happen when we launched the celebration back in 2006," said Anastos. "Our first two years of `Hockey Day' have been absolutely excellent and we expect the scale and profile of the celebration will just continue to grow each year. We encourage everyone to get involved and celebrate in their own way."

To get involved or to have your event included in the list of happenings around the state on CCHA.com, please email hockeyday@ccha.com or call the CCHA Office at (248) 888-0600.

LSSU to Play Wayne State for the Final Time

SAULT STE. MARIE – Lake Superior State will be a part of Wayne State’s final hockey season as the Lakers head to Detroit for a non-conference series on Friday and Saturday.
The Lakers (1-4-1) will play the Warriors (0-5-1) at 7:05 p.m. on both nights at the Michigan State Fairgrounds Coliseum (5,500). Coverage of the series will be available on the B2 Network and Rock 101 FM with web streaming on http://www.lssulakers.com/.

Wayne State, which competes in College Hockey America, is disbanding its men’s hockey program at the conclusion of the 2007-08 season. The Warriors began their program in 1999-00 and have been coached by veteran Bill Wilkinson during all nine seasons. Wilkinson, a former Central Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year at Western Michigan, is in his 25th season overall.

No. 12 Notre Dame swept LSSU, 7-3 and 4-1, last weekend during the Lakers’ first CCHA series of the season. LSSU is 1-2-1 against non-conference opponents, all of whom have received mention in the national polls. This weekend’s series is a tune-up for No. 2 Michigan, and the Lakers’ have no intention of letting down their guard.

Despite being winless, Wayne State has been competitive during a similarly-tough early-season schedule. The Warriors lost 5-2 at Alaska-Anchorage, and lost 6-2 and tied 2-2 at Ferris State. Their other three losses have been to fellow CHA opponent Robert Morris, including one at the Nye Frontier Classic in Anchorage.

WSU is led in scoring by seniors Mike Forgie (3-1—4) and Stavros Paskaris (0-4—4). The Warriors’ captain, Forgie, hails from the Stouffville Spirit, which is the same junior team for which Lakers Simon Gysbers and Will Acton played. Paskaris and the Warriors’ Derek Punches are former Soo Indians.

LSSU sophomore Nathan Perkovich scored a goal in both games against Notre Dame and has a goal in five of the Lakers’ first six contests. He is currently tied for fourth in the CCHA in power-play goals with three. Senior Dan Eves (2-3—5) and freshman Chad Nehring (2-3—5) are second in points for the Lakers, but were shut out last weekend by the Irish.

Lakers Swept by Notre Dame in CCHA Opener

CCHA referee Kevin Hall felt like injecting himself into the game early on Thursday evening calling LSSU freshman Rick Schofield for hooking during a delayed holding penalty giving Notre Dame a consecutive 4 minutes of power play starting at 7:48 of the first period. The Irish capitalized with Ryan Thang scoring a power play goal at 10:43 of the first period.

LSSU was able to capitalize with a power play goal of their own with Nathan Perkovich scoring his 4th goal of the season 16 seconds into the Lakers one man advantage, Zac MacVoy received the assist on the goal. Notre Dame took the lead, 1-2, with an even strength goal at 18:22 of the first period.

Notre Dame added to their lead scoring their third goal of the game 17 seconds into the second period and a 4th goal at 4:20 of the second stanza. Schofield was able to make an amends for his earlier penalities by scoring his first colligate goal at 8:08 of the second period, with Steve Olesky getting his first assist of the season on the goal.

Midway through the second period the Lakers fell apart after ND’s Ian Cole checked first year Laker Zac MacVoy from behind at mid ice, MacVoy skated the width of the ice and high-sticked Evan Rankin in retaliation then appeared to throw a punch at Dan VeNard after the wistle, resulting in a 2 minute high-sticking penalty, 5 minute cross-checking penalty and given a 10minute disqualification for the skirmish.

Notre Dame scored two power play goals during the resulting power play and an additional goal 40 seconds into the third period to bring the score to 2-7. Laker Josh Sim notched his first goal of the season at 8:28 of the third period with Troy Schwab getting the assist on the goal.

LSSU sophomore goaltender Pat Inglis recorded 20 saves on 27 Notre Dame shots. LSSU was able to put 3 of 15 shots past ND goaltender Jordan Pearce. LSSU was 1-for-4 on the power play while ND was 3-for-5 with the extra man.

Friday night the Lakers looked to come out strong and put Thursday night’s game behind them. Notre Dame was able to take the lead just before the end of the first period with Christian Hanson tallying a shorthanded goal at 19:19 of the first period, and added to their lead with a power play goal by Kyle Lawson at 4:54 of the second period.

LSSU’s Nathan Perkovich was able to score his 5 goal in 6 games at 116:24 of the second period on the power play with Matt Cowie and Troy Schwab getting the assists on the goal.

Notre Dame was able to hold LSSU off the score board the rest of the game while adding two additional goals in the third period including one on the power play.

LSSU freshman Brian Mahoney-Wilson recorded 32 saves on 36 shots in a losing effort, while Notre Dame’s Brad Phillips recorded 16 saves on 17 Laker shots. LSSU went 1-for-7 on the power play (2-for-11 on the weekend), while ND scored twice on five opportunities going 5-for-10 on the weekend).

Next weekend LSSU travels to Detroit, Michigan to take on Wayne State in the last ever meeting between the two schools, Wayne State’s hockey team will cease operations at the end of this season. LSSU has an all time record of 4-2-0 against the Warriors including a sweep last season in the Soo.
