LSSU Continues to Struggle in CCHA Action

The Lakers continue to struggle after being swept by Northern Michigan University. Friday night in Marquette LSSU was able to take an early 1-0 lead on John Scrymgeour’s second goal of the season at 10:02 of the first period with Steve Olesky and Chad Nehring tallying the assists. NMU’s Nick Sirota, tied it up at 1-1 scoring his 11th goal of the season on the power play just over a minute later, at 11:31, while Oleksy was serving 2 for tripping. Dan Eves gave the Lakers the 2-1 lead on the power play at 13:18 with Zac Macvoy and Rick Schofield getting the assists on LSSU’s second goal.

After taking a lead into the locker room after the first period for the third straight game LSSU’s second period struggles continued with NMU’s Phil Fox, and Matt Siddall scoring in the second period to give the Wildcats a 2-3 lead, Siddall’s goal was shorthanded.

NMU’s Gregor Hanson added a goal in the third period to hand LSSU a 2-4 loss.
LSSU freshman goaltender Brian Machoney-Wilson made 17 saves on NMU’s 21 shots while NMU’s Reid Ellingson made 26 saves on LSSU’s 28 shots to record the win. LSSU went 1-for-5 on the power play while NMU was 1-for-4 with the extra man.

On Saturday night the story was much the same with LSSU’s Dan Eves scoring a power play goal at 5:27 of the first period and Cowie and MacVoy getting the assists. NMU’s Mark Olver scored a power play goal with less than a minute left in the first period to tie the game up at 1-1.
After a scoreless second period NMU added two goals in the third period with Gregor Hanson and Mark Olver scoring at 9:31 and 11:08 respectively.

Mahoney-Wilson making his second start in two nights made 21 saves on the 24 shots he faced in a losing effort making while Ellingson recorded 19 saves on the 20 Laker shots he gaced. LSSU went 1-for-4 on the power play (2-for-9 on the weekend), while NMU scored one power play goal on their 6 opportunities (going 2-for-10 on the weekend).

Next weekend LSSU plays host to Michigan State University in CCHA play. The Lakers are still in search of their first point in CCHA action.
