Lake Superior State University recruit Matthew Martello of North York, Ontario was drafted this past weekend by the Kitchener Rangers, of the Ontario Hockey League, with the 118th overall pick. Martello played last season for the Vaughan Vipers of the Ontario Provincial Junior “A” Hockey League, where he lead the Vipers in scoring with 28 goals and 39 assists in 48 games has also accumulated 79 penalty minutes.
Martello is a 6’-1” forward that shoots left handed and weights in at 180 pounds. Matt is ranked 130 on the NHL Central Scouting Bureau Final rankings
Matthew Martello was named the Most Improved Player of the year in the South Conference and also was finalist in the MVP category. Matthew Martello was on to the South East Conference All Star team earlier this season. Under OHL rules, a team can only dress 3 overage players; Martello will turn 19 in December which will provide him with only one and a half guaranteed seasons of play in the OHL. After which he would have to be designated an overage player for Kitchener, a team with plenty of veteran talent, be dealt to another team in the OHL, or face being cut outright. Kitchener is claiming that Martello will be considering his options over the summer. The choice should be pretty clear with the enormous offensive opportunities awaiting him at LSSU, with the ablity to team up with players such as Trent Campbell, Nathan Perkovich, and Troy Schwab. |
